School seeks to forfeit 100-0 win: Really?

I recently read a story out from the Associated Press about a Texas high school girls basketball team who are now apologizing for it’s 100-0 blowout victory. In fact, the officials from The Covenant School, a Christ centered school, are actually in the process of trying to forfeit the game because of the margin of victory, stating that “a victory without honor is a great loss.”

Apparently, the ladies of The Covenant School were up 59-0 at half time, and did not ease up until their were four minutes left in the game and they had reached 100 points against the losing team, Dallas Academy. According to the article, The coach for Dallas Academy told The Dallas Morning News that the fame turned into a “layup drill,” with the opposing team’s guards waiting to steal the ball and drive it straight to the basket.

Dallas Academy is also a Christian school. They haven’t won a basketball game in last four seasons. The academy has 20 girls in their school altogether, 8 which are on the basketball team. They boast of their small class sizes which allow them to give special attention to its struggling students with “learning differences,” such as dyslexia, dysgraphia, short attention spans and so on.

From all the comments I read on the web, there seems to be a general consensus of outrage towards the kids and the administration of The Covenant School. Which in some regards are fair enough. But there are a couple of things here that really get my goat. At the risk of being politically incorrect, there are some things that should be addressed.

At first I couldn’t understand why everyone was so upset with the kids and the administration of The Covenant School. But then I read between the lines. It’s because the kids at The Dallas Academy have “learning differences.” To which I say, they shouldn’t have been playing each other in the first place! On a common sense level, the individuals who thought that this was a good and fair match-up, including the coaches of BOTH teams, should have been blamed first. To put this into perspective think of it this way. A Division III college never plays a Division I school. It just doesn’t happen.

I would really like to know the message we are sending these kids with this squabble. What are we saying about these teams and these kids? There are quite a few themes that can be assumed from it; none of them good for either team. A few of them too politically incorrect for me to even utter.

But what do you think? Is it me? I look forward to hearing how others feel about this sad story.

I don’t find it fair for the winning team, but it dosen’t seem right that they put the students with learning disabilities against the students with no problems at all.
